Birthday bash at Clubhouse
We have had another eventful weekend in the Club.
The First Anniversary of the Grand Opening of the Clubhouse was celebrated on Saturday evening 26th November, with bacon and egg burgers and the Anniversary Cake made and decorated by the inimitable Chris Ryall, and cut by Noel Fogarty. Noel was also presented with a "Certificate of Endurance" by the Commodore, for his ten year leadership of the planning and construction of the building!
As happened last year, the next day saw the stalwarts out at Happs Art & Craft Day rostered on as parking marshalls. It was great to have so many volunteers this year, which meant that the am shift was replaced for the pm stint. Cars with occupants were expertly manouvered around a quite scattered and fairly restricted area on one-way tracks by way of hand-held radios - a job impossible without the numbers on the ground and use of radios.
Another great advertisement for the Yacht Club, with a display of photos and information at the Craft Affair, and Chad Cowan's Minnow on display at the gate, with the found and resurrected the Club Banner!!
Very many thanks to the volunteers: Peter & Chris Ryall; Klaus Schmechtig; Rolf Gelbke; Wayne Rhodes; Joan Embry; Trish & Morgan Flower and Chad & Dean Cowan in the morning and Andy Whittell; Mike Baldock; Graham Niccol; Graeme Missen; Dave Chester; Colin Lovelady and Jo, Chad and Dean Cowan in the afternoon. The radio skills of the Juniors were greatly enhanced as the day wore on, and their dogged application and preparedness to be involved is to be applauded.
Thankyou very much to you all for the giving of your time and efforts, it is much appreciated and was a great Club effort - and we made $650 through the generous gold coin donations - with no overheads! - a good profit for the day!
Joan Embry (Commodore)
Opening of the 2011/12 season on Sunday 13th November.
At the Opening of the Season Day on November 13th The Patron the Hon. Barry House MLC spoke of his delight when declaring the season open from the verandah of the new clubroom, not yet a year old, and that he was impressed by the speed and dedication of the club members and the local community in doing such an excellent job of completing the Headquarters, and making it so functional.
The Shire President, Ian Stubbs, and CEO of the Shire Mike Archer were joined by Councillor Terry Best and other distinguished guests on the club verandah, along with the Flag officers and committee members of DBYC for the raising of the flag by Rosie Rowell and the National Anthem.
Rear Commodore Andy Whittell, was presented with his pennant as badge of office by the Patron and Commodore Joan Embry.
The view from the balcony showed members and friends taking part in the proceedings, with Splash dinghies in the background.
The boats on the beach were part of the 16 boat fleet getting ready for the Sail Past and then the racing.
PRESENTATION NIGHT 2011
The annual presentation night was a gala affair at the Dunsborough Districts Country Club, with the year of sailing to celebrate, and the opening of the new clubrooms last November. The Hon Barry House MLC and his wife Sharryn were present, as were many of the Club members and friends, and the sumptuous dinner prepared by the indefatigable Chris Ryall was enjoyed by all.
In the Junior section of awards for the night, the two Junior Dunsborough Concept awards, donated by Jim Major, were presented - first to Junior Champion Morgan Flower, and secondly the Junior Consistency trophy going to Chad Cowan.
Junior Achievement Certificates, donated by Don Nickels and Brian Kerman, went to Sarah Hales and Rosie Rowell.
DBYC Sailing Achievement certificates and Awards donated by Don Nickels and Brian Kerman were then presented to three Laser sailors, Stefan Kurys-Romer; Klaus Schmechtig and Andy Whittell, who all represented the Club at inter-State and National Laser regattas this year.
Also to Richard and Rosie Rowell also received recognition for twice representing the Club in National and State Mirror Championships.
The Dunsborough Achievement Certificate and Award went to Steve Flower, who has displayed extraordinary vision, and performed a mammoth task in getting the Minnow fleet really going in the Club for the Junior sailors this year, as well as performing his duties as Rear Commodore Sailing for the whole Club throughout the year.
At the Senior sailing business end of the spectrum The Club Championship Pennant for the GP14s went to Green Leader (Peter Ryall with crews Rob Archer/ Gerry Herd); and the Club Champiohship Pennant for the Lasers went to Calypso (Klaus Schmechtig).
The Southern Compass Perpetual trophy, sponsored by David and Marika Pearson for Consistency in GP14s went to Whizz Bang (Jim Major/Cassidy Naughton)
The Inaugural Laser consistency trophy, sponsored by Joe White of JMW Real Estate was won by Rusty Demon (Stefan Kurys-Romer)
The Patron's Cup sponsored by Club Patron Hon. Barry House, went to The White Rabbit (Andy Whittell).
Sailing Trophy series were shared around Club boats and members. The Doris Hughes Memorial Trophy, sponsor Fogarty's of Glass Lodge, was won by Tamzine (Joan/Mark Embry)
The Vasse Felix Winery Perpetual trophy went to Green Leader (Peter Ryall/Rob Archer & Gerry Herd)
The Doug & June McCaffery Perpetual was won by Rusty Demon (Stefan Kurys-Romer)
The Cape Construction Perpetual went to Calypso (Klaus Schmechtig)
Congratulations to all members who took to the water this year!
Meanwhile although DBYC has finished the sailing season, the Club is entering a team for the Foundation Country Championships in Perth on June 4th and 5th, and Stefan Kurys-Romer is off to the USA to represent the Club in the World Masters Laser championships in San Francisco in August.
The Club looks forward to a very full and fruitful sailing programme next year, with Minnows; Mirrors;Lasers and GP 14s on the water, and a healthy cruising section.
As well as the solemn and official presentations during the evening, light relief was provided by several special awards. Peter Hales was presented with the mother duck of all ducks, for losing sails out of the back of his ute - not once but twice! And arriving for the presentation evening at the Country Club with the family - one week early!!
Vice Commodore Margaret Norman was presented with a tiny blue plastic boat, (which she can play with in the bath!) as she has a Vice Commodore pennant - but no boat to fly it on!! Slight difference in size!!
Sarah Hales received some very glitzy accessories, including a diamond tiara! - as she is always leaving clothes around to be put in the lost property box at the Club - so obviously she may value having more ritzy outfits for sailing!!!
The backbone of the Club - the many members who officiated in the racing and support scene - were all presented with a bottle of wine each, kindly donated from the vineyard of Laser sailor - Colin Lovelady.

The Blackwood Challenge
This event took place on April 2nd and 3rd, and Augusta Yacht Club hosted "The Big Smoke" team from Mounts Bay Sailing Club and the DBYC team. in racing in the GP14s over the weekend.
The Juniors went down with their Minnows, Splashes plus sundry canoes, kayaks and boards, and a great time was had by all - sailing, racing and just generally being in and around the water! AYC presented the winning helmsperson with an Inaugural Blackwood Challenge Trophy, and this went to Dean Cowan.
The lone Mirror helmed by Richard Rowell, with Rosie his daughter, also competed very creditably against the GP14s, and gained valuable practice for the Mirror championships to be held in Mandurah over the Easter weekend.Best of luck to them!
Camping at the yacht club was basically the order of he day for parents, juniors and members of the Clubs and the camararaderie over the weekend was enjoyed by all.
The "Flying Fish" Teams racing event and the Blackwood Challenge Trophy was won by Team Big Smoke and no one could match the expertise of Bruce Quail and Steve Heywood in La Rousse, but after all they are the Bronze Division GP14 World Champions awarded at the recent World event in Sri Lanka! Congratulations to them and to their team. AYC were second and DBYC third in the weekend results.
Then last weekend resulted in racing being cancelled due to huge swells and wind, and a lot of seaweed washed onto the beach, but a lot of tidying up and consolidation was done around the boatshed.
The final racing day of the season this weekend saw the Mirrors on the water, with mixed crews with parents having fun with the juniors. There seems to be a lot of keenness in the Club Junior sailing fleet now and also a lot of parental interest in getting on to the water, which augurs well for next season, and the Minnows, Splashes and Mirrors should be well used next year.
The Laser fleet was out again, with one GP14 and a Mirror battling the start line in two races. The breeze was a bit light for the Lasers, but suited the geriatric boat well - and we all know who that was! However the spinnaker agility and experience, coupled with the yardstick, meant Richard and Rosie Rowell in Goldseeker were too strong for Tamzine who could only have the satisfaction of getting over the line first.
Klaus Schmechtig won the day in both races in the Laser fleet The evening Bacon and Egg Burger night in the clubhouse was enjoyed by all, and the next major event in the Club calendar is the Presentation Night on Saturday 14th May, at the Dunsborough and Districts Country Club. A huge roll-up is expected as there has been so much fun and activity during the year.
Dunsborouh Bay Yacht Club is very much alive and well, and the new Clubhouse and Boatshed are being well used. The flooring and tables and chairs about to be purchased will round off the seasons' activities well.
The Bay was bedecked with bright blue sails as Minnows of all colours were parading their versatility and manoeuvreability in front of the Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club.
Visiting juniors from Rockingham and Shelley brought their yachts down to join the growing DBYC fleet, and had a morning of tuition in sailing, and also racing.
Although the winds were light, they picked up a little as the morning progressed. Not enough to blow boats over! But the many capsizes were all part of the fun of taking a cool-off and then practising righting the little yachts.
DBYC juniors have been away twice this year at other regattas and the growing camaraderie between all the junior sailors, who are getting to know each other well, was very evident and great to see.
The beach was crowded by parents and onlookers, and the new DBYC clubhouse was full of happy faces and hungry sailors, as they all enjoyed a BBQ afterwards. Pennants were given out for place-getters in the second division, and Dunsborough sailors Chad Cowan and Mary Pethick both did well in the novice class.
The two top sailors in silver and gold divisions were from Rockingham, and the gold division winner is the State Minnow Champion - Kane Orvard. A depleted mixed fleet took to the water for the Senior sailing in the afternoon. Results: Club c/ship GP 14s 1st Green Leader (Peter Ryall/Graeme Niccol) 2nd WhizzBang (Jim Major/Cassidy Naughton) Lasers 1st Calypso (Klaus Schmechtig) 2nd Little Aussie Battler (Colin Lovelady) 3rd Rusty Demon (Stegan Kurys-Romer) 2nd Race Mixed Fleet (Global Justice Soluns Trophy ) 1st Laser Rusty Demon (Ste4fan Kurys-Romer) 2nd Laser Little Aussie Battler (Colin Lovelady) 3rd GP14 Green Leader (Peter Ryall/Graeme Niccol) 4th GP14 WhizzBang (Jim Major/Cassidy Naughton) , Joan Embry (PR DBYC)
LASER SAILORS Stefan Kurys-Romer receiving his Laser Cube.
Three Laser sailors from DBYC did extremely well in the LASER MASTERS NATIONAL TITLES held in Port Stephens NSW over four days last week. This event has not been held for the last 25 years!
Lasers have the choice of using one of three rigs, according to the weight of the sailor, and the races were mixed ages and genders.
The winds varied between 12 and 20 knots, with strong bullets coming through as the cold fronts passed over. The 20 knot winds favoured the heavier and/or extremely fit sailors.
The winner of the Grand Master Full rig was Colin Dibbs from FSC, who came down to Dunsborough just after Christmas and imparted some of his knowledge and expertise to the local Laser sailors.
Second in the Grand Master Full Rig was DBYC sailor Stefan Kurys-Romer (photographed with local Federal Member Bob Baldwin at the presentation).
The two other DBYC sailors who did extremely well in their divisions, out of big fields, were Andy Whittell in 14th place in the same division of the Grand Master Full Rig competition, and Klaus Schmechtig 9th in the Grand Master Radial Rig ( with a medium sized sail). These Laser sailors are performing extremely well, and upholding the traditions that World Laser sailor Colin Lovelady, also from DBYC, has set over the years.
DBYC congratulates them all on their achievements.
